The holy, glorious, and right-victorious New Hieromartyr and Equal-to-the-Apostles Kosmas Aitolos, also called Patro-Kosmas, is one of the most significant personalities of the Church of our times. He influenced the faithful in exceptionally many ways. His teachings were immediately put into practice. Albeit he was canonized a Saint of the Orthodox Church as late as 1961 by the Ecumenical Patriarch, churches were built, and holy icons were painted right after his martyrdom. A holy monastery was built at his execution in the Greek city of Kolkondas, presently part of Albania. We commemorate him on August 24, as it was on that day he was martyred in 1779. He is called Aitolos because he was born in the Greek region of Aitolia, in the village of Mega Dendron.

Numerous monasteries and churches are dedicated to Saint Kosmas; a major monastery dedicated to him is located in Ontario, Canada.
