While studying Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, I often spent my recess time at the Institutes's Library with a young researcher who was an expert in languages spoken around the Arctic. He noticed that I was interested in his findings and would often share his knowledge; it was here that I heard for the first time about the languages of Alaska.
Years later, and very soon after the publishing of our best-selling "My Prayer Book," the mother of one of the many nieces of Saint Olga of Alaska called me on our 410-734-2771 with a special request. She had bought a copy of "My Prayer Book," and she wanted also to send one to her daughter in Crete, Greece. Now, shipping from Alaska to Crete costs much more than a copy of "My Prayer Book." Could I help? Of course, I could; it's Free Shipping for a reason. As we talked, I asked her if she spoke Yup'ik, and she did. I asked her to pray that we would be able to publish books in Yup'ik.
Seven years later, In the summer of 2015, we had the blessing of meeting in Atlanta, GA, His Eminence of "Memory Eternal" Bishop David. We talked often when we were making "The Life of Christ in Icons" for his children who spoke Yup'ik, the language of Saint Olga of Alaska. I mentioned to him that Ekaterine, my wife, wished to make a "Paterikon for Kids" book about the Saint's life. Late Bishop David lifted both his arms in blessing and said: "I bless you both, with both my hierarchical arms, to publish this book as soon as possible." So, when the Saint was canonized, our joy was great, and "Paterikon for Kids #120" was soon a reality. It is now being published in a second revised edition. It is also available in a Greek translation, and many women in gestation pray for her intercessions. Please pray that we will publish it in the Saint's language soon.
May Saint Olga of Alaska, the Midwife,
intercede for all of us and everyone who asks for her intercessions.
As for our friend, the late Bishop David, we wish him:
"Memory eternal on Earth; glory eternal in the Heavens!"
This book is written and illustrated by Egle-Ekaterine Potamitis.
